Hmmm hmmm hmmm...
So I decided to start another blog, this time on Blogspot cos it's more professional apparently..
I guess it's a good idea as, in the past, this blog has been less than professional.


I am going to keep this blog I suppose.. don't know what I'll do with it though..
Probably leave it in a drawer for years then rediscover it later all mouldy and overgrown. Then I'll sell it to science for medicine or whatever...

So look who's come crawling back...
I've been pretty busy recently with deadlines and... well mostly deadlines. It was a big one though, I sat up for 2 nights straight getting stuff done, it was pretty nuts.
But that's not why we're here!
We're here or the awful pictures.
I have a couple today, the first is a sample page from a comic I'm... not going to finish. It was part of the project I just finished, to which I produced 4 out of 7 pages for this comic. It was all going super well until I got to the printing stage and that's when THE WORLD ENDED.
Just... its... printing. Ugh..

I'm actually currently at an illustration silent auction. I've got 5 pieces up for offer (2 of which already have bids. Hooray!!), and if they sell, it ill be the first time I have ever sold any of my work. This is fucking horrifying..

So if you're in Bournemouth for the next 4 hours, come on a jolly wander to the Illustration room at the AUCB and BUY OUR CRAP.

Ah I've just read the entirety or Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics (I know, I can't believe it's taken me so long to actually get round to reading it!)
A really interesting read, really useful for the stuff I'm doing at the moment. I don't think I really need to praise it any much considering the reputation he has as a critic and theorist.
Next up, Eisner...
Also maybe more Mieke Bal. Has anyone else read any Mieke Bal?? She's got some really interesting stuff on character in narrative (mainly literature). I recommend her book Narratology, for a fascinating, if not always readily accessible read on narrative theory.
Very much a university book.


On the art front, I've gone and had a killer crisis over the last few days, with the sad departure of my tablet. I think a connection's gone somewhere, but I'll be damned if I know where. I opened it up and was just like... huh??
I know nothing of electronics and buying a new tablet was infinitely more preferable to electrocuting myself or breathing the noxious fumes of burning plastic as it melts all over my lap...
So I'm getting a little Wacom Bamboo pen and touch thing. It should be cool cos it's got integrated touch pad capabilities which, if usable in Photoshop, might streamline things some. Or make them more awkward, whatever...

I've got some fun comic things to upload today, including the first page of a probably abandoned project. I never really got past this one page... but it was cool to do.
Half the time I just don't get round to producing anything which is a really stupid way to do things..

So now I'm going to go back and grovel in pathetic thanks for the fact that [info]harveyjames' busy weekday schedule means he can't upload his cat girl special till Sunday. Once I get my new tablet (Wednesday! Wednesday! Wednesday!!) I can finish my gal and send her on over to be included in the community creativity orgy that is Harveyjames Cat Girls 2010.

So I've got a couple of big things to upload, but I think I'll divide them over a couple of posts for prolonged dramatic impact, or maybe a diffusion of tension or even extended disappointment. I'm hoping for the first one really..

So today's post is the final image from the thumbnails in the previous post; You know, the one where I said I'd be uploading development and progress notation etc.

I dropped a full beer barrel on my toe today. It fucking hurt.
Now my toe is bruised under the nail..
Now, had I been wearing my old shoes, the shoes that began to fall apart the day after I bought them they would probably have imploded. It was about 10st after all. However, my new shoes pretty much kicked it back.
They were like 'Pfft. FUCK OFF!!'
I mean, it still hurt like a motherfucker, don't get me wrong.
I did the whole silent scream for about a minute.
But my shoes were fine.

And that, children, is why we spend the extra £70 on shoes.




So anyways..

The This is... Exhibition.

I'll upload some thumbs and bits and pieces, though I have actually got further down the way than I will let on here. I'm going to pace this so each bit is worth posting from a progressive point of view..

As is often the standard kick board for these kind of things, I drew some quick and awful thumbnails.
The thing is that, when I do thumbnails, I tend to draw super lightly as I am incredibly spineless and don't like committing to anything. Also I work with 2H pencils for whatever reason, which really only exacerbate the situation..
So I've gone back, and tried to make them easier to read, but they're still awful. So grit your teeth, eh??

Eugh..
No.. I mean.. I didn't do that many really since this is only a month long project, I don't want to get caught up in the preliminary stages.. Past projects have seen a distinct lack of progression early on. Lots of writing. Lots of ideas.
Sooo I'm powering through this time.
GOOOO!!!!

The second thumbnail is just an octopus and the phrase 'Octopuses, lots of them!'
The idea here was to draw lots of octopuses. I... did not follow this up...

The others are all variations on the same image, basically. It's sea monsters of course!!
Since recently I've been doing a lot of fan art (except I guess, the EVE thing..), I wanted to do some designing of my own, and this just played nicely into that ambition. Similarly I've been needing to produce more dynamic compositions, more full pictures, so I'm hitting for that.

Hmmm i promise there'll be more interesting things in the next post. Maybe a coloured picture, also more thumbnails (joy..).
This has been greatly disappointing..

In perhaps one of my more pathetic moments, today I was hit by a soap bubble and flinched



Uuuuuhm..
I'm working on a piece to submit to Bournemouth's This Is... exhibition. This time round the theme is 'Nautical Nonsense'. Over the next few days I might upload a few thumbnail sketches or progressive bits and pieces, in an attempt to get more involved in the progress which in turn will be good for credit on my uni course.
I also desperately deeeesperately need to make some sort of website so I can put it on the business cards I designed a good few weeks back...

So I work in a hotel, on the bar, and recently we had a Peroni pump installed for people to enjoy horrible horrible lager. Now, I don't know if you ever seen a Peroni glass..



They're tall. They're thin.
Whoever designed these things is a fucking idiot.
You know the mayor from Noddy?? He's one of those toys that you push but it never falls down, it always rights itself because it's got a weight in the bottom. Well these glasses are like that, only the exact opposite. Every... every opportunity they get they throw themselves from your tray, flying gracefully to their wholly welcomed death. It's like serving beer in a suicidal, upright pencil.

Trying to (repeatedly) carry trays of these things up the gravel path outside the hotel proved a subtle balance between trying to keep them upright and cursing the sky like the guy at the end of Planet of the Apes.

So I've realised people praising me makes me really uncomfortable. Simple solution... never do anything good ever again.

Unrelated to everything!
I finally watched the end of The Darjeeling Limited after I missed the last five minutes on a plane trip to New York three years ago.
It was more obviously funny in places than Wes Anderson's other films, but the story kind of lost its way later on. It wasn't as perfectly formed as say, The Life Aquatic or The Royal Tenenbaums.
But then, any film which includes the line "I love you, but I'm going to mace you in the face" is a default winner for me...

Oh oh and I watched Osamu Tezuka's Metropolis. holy freaking WOW was the animation in that incredible!
The crowd scenes where everyone seems to be doing something. I mean like... you hardly ever see background characters on an animation loop, it's there, but not very often..
I wasn't sure if Tezuka's childlike character designs could carry the story, but it's obvious that A LOT of time was taken over it, and it really impressed me.

It's hard to find a video that really shows how freaking gorgeous this movie is without showing all the best bits...

Wwwwwwant to update sooo...




A recent piece for a competition which I didn't finish (there's meant to be a second girl, you see...). I will come back to this soon, but for now am taking a few days out from Photoshop as I spent most of the last few weeks leaning over computer, scratching at my tablet and neglecting my long suffering girlfriend, who I will actually be moving in with in about 3 weeks.
I need... I need money...


I have a few other bits and pieces on the go though which I will come back to when I do. Character designs etc.
You know the drill.

This has not been amusing nor entertaining so I will finish here.
